Probation – Termination of contract
In order to give an employee a full opportunity to meet the required standards it is recommended you should wait until the end of the probationary period before taking any decision to terminate employment unless the employee is not the right fit or will not reach the required standard.
Where a decision to terminate the probationer’s contract has been made, proceed as follows:
- Meet the employee, having given them a reasonable amount of notice in writing.
- Allow the employee to be represented by a trade union representative or work colleague.
- Set out clearly the reasons why the employee has not successfully completed the probationary period
- Give the employee the opportunity to present their case including any mitigating circumstances.
- Confirm your decision
Remember to keep in touch with HR, who will support you through this process.
Once the ternination is conformed, you will need to submit a leavers form.
HR will confirm termination in writing.
