Probation
The purpose of the probation period is to see how you are settling in to your new role and if you need any support or training to ensure you are job ready.
Passing your probation
During this time, you will have regular one-to-one meetings with your line-manager who will set you clear targets to ensure that you are job ready and identify any areas where you might need additional training or coaching. You will then have further meetings to assess your progress and your line-manager can help you with any questions you may have along the way.
The probation period is usually three months or six depending on your role. You can find how long your probation is in your contract of employment.
You will automatically pass your probation unless you are notified by your manager that your performance is not to the required standards.
Please note: you will NOT receive written confirmation you have passed your probation.
Extending the probationary period
The purpose of extending a probationary period is to allow you if required more time to improve your performance and demonstrate your competency to undertake the full range of duties, skills and behavior of the role.
If your performance is unsatisfactory in some areas, but your manager feels that further training and support may bring you up to the required standard, an extension ( on a month-by-month basis) can be considered and introduced.
This could also be appropriate in cases if you or your manager have been absent from the workplace for an extended period during probation due to circumstances beyond your or their control.
Your manager will hold regular progress meeting and support you during this period.
An extension will normally be granted only where there are special circumstances justifying such a course and can only be made before the end of your original probationary period.

Any extensions to a probation will only happen once, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
If your probation period is extended your manager will discuss the reason for the extensions and the required standards, but also what support they will put in place to support you and the length of the extension of the probation period.
What happens if I don’t meet the expected standards?
If you fail to meet the required standards, by the end of the extended period of probation. You manager will explain the reasons for the decisions and your your employment will be terminated with notice.
HR will confirm to you in writing the manager decision.
